Do you love the outdoors and want to create art while immersed in nature? This 3-day workshop is designed for adventurous artists eager to combine their creative practice with the beauty and spontaneity of the natural world.

On Days 1 and 2, we’ll take short hikes (easy to moderate) on two different scenic mountain trails within 20 minutes of Albuquerque. Along the way, we’ll pause for on-location sketching sessions and creative exercises using both traditional and natural materials to spark fresh ideas and encourage a more resourceful, intuitive approach to art-making.

Pack your art supplies in a backpack, keep your setup light and portable, and get ready to engage your senses as you observe, interpret, and respond to your surroundings in the moment.

Day 3 brings us back to the studio, where we’ll reflect on our outdoor experiences and examine how they can inspire future work or even a new body of art.

Led by artist and experienced hiker Mary Beth, who regularly incorporates “outdoor studios” into her own practice, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect deeply with nature and your creative process. Whether you’re looking to shake up your routine, explore new materials, or simply enjoy making art in the open air this experience is sure to energize and inspire!

Please sign up early; class size is limited.

Mary Beth Woiccak’s work is inspired by the natural world: tangible and ethereal.

The organic forms, shadows, and shapes that are innate on rocks and in landscapes

are all part of the visual language she documents. Color, line, and the tactile nature

of objects are explored consistently through Mary Beth’s body of work as a whole. In

2019, she moved to Albuquerque to be closer to the landscapes, hikes, and beauty

of the Southwest. In addition to making and exhibiting her artwork, Mary Beth has

worked professionally for the past 20+ years in arts administration including

positions of art consultant, gallery manager, and program director.

While Nature prepares herself for a long winter’s nap, leaf children “frolic” as they break loose from the summer restraints imposed by Mother tree.  In this expressive watercolor and ink class, using real fall foliage, explore the dance of fall leaves starting with gestural sketching. Discover vegetative patterns and geometry that form the backbone of organic perspective. Practice simple color mixing and layering to construct the complexity of the autumnal foliar palette. Demos and exercises in expressive pen mark-making help to define shape, form and texture. Whether your approach is illustrative or artistic in this 3-day workshop your sketchbook pages will abound with the energy and brilliance of the harvest season.
