A portrait can be more than a picture with a likeness. Instead of just creating a solid shape with information designating hair, eyes, nose, etc., it’s possible to see the painting as made up of visual elements – line, shape, value, and color – all in a relationship within the space of the canvas. This approach is not just about learning to “paint outside the lines,” but also about learning to see the information in a new and different way.  My workshop is based on years of experience teaching others how to recognize patterns, make comparisons, and interpret edges, color temperature, and shapes. There will be demonstrations, discussion, and presentations. This workshop is for artists interested in enhancing their drawing and painting skills, while also learning how to approach a painting in a more creative way. Instruction will be in oils and the class is for the intermediate to advanced painters. Pastels, water-based oils, and acrylics are permissible. www.carolynanderson.com

Acrylic pouring is a painting technique where acrylic paint is mixed with some pouring medium and then poured onto a surface in various ways. Sometimes colors are poured directly from individual cups and or combined and poured together. Ming will be using Golden High Flow acrylics on canvas or wood panels. She will guide you to pour on a small canvas first and work up to a medium canvases. Silver acrylic brushes are recommended for finishing touches. Ming will also demonstrate a pour on a large canvas. You are welcome to try it! “This style of painting is about freedom, creativity, and your imagination. It is about finding your inner spirit and letting it work for and through you. I like to free my mind first, I watch carefully how the color runs and blends, usually liking bright colors against dark colors.“  - Ming . The results are magical!

Please sign up early; class size is limited to 12 students.

Cacti are botanical subjects that present all kinds of fun perspective challenges! Join Marjorie Leggitt in this 3 session workshop as she guides you to create a colorful composition of Opuntia, better known as Prickly Pear. Marjorie will help you to discover how these succulents conform to basic geometric forms and mathematical patterns. Then follow along with exercises that hone your observation and artistic skills as you develop a graphite perspective drawing. Through demos and exercises, learn how to combine the expressiveness of a pen with the subtle colors of watercolor. Discover non-traditional pen and ink marks to create unique textures and forms. Practice color mixing and watercolor layering to enhance the line work and capture earthy, luminescent colors. Learn about the principles of cast shadows from your own clay model. Apply your new skills to create a wonderful mixed media piece of art. Previous experience using watercolor is strongly recommended.

This portrait workshop is designed for artists working in either oils or pastel. Susan will work with and teach in both mediums. For the first part of each class Susan will answer any questions from the group before she illustrates lessons on different ways to approach portraits through screen share. She will show masterworks of past and present artists to discuss different lighting and painting techniques. This should inspire and give the class examples of how to use the different mediums to achieve various effects and moods. The second half of each class will focus on Susan demonstrating her approach to working from a photo. She will offer the same photo references to the class so they can paint along as she demonstrates, or have the option of painting it as homework during the week. Students are encouraged to email their homework images during the week for Susan to give her suggestions advice to each student throughout the workshop. Susan will do a pastel demo for the 1st and 3rd class and an oil demo for the 2nd and 4th class.

Students at all levels are welcome.
