Since 1929 . . . Still Inspiring and Creating Artists!

An Art Exhibition Inspired by Nature

Show Dates - Friday, Oct. 9 - Friday, Nov. 20

Natural design is a source of infinite variety and form. It can follow complex patterns that can repeat, scale and progress with incredible complexity and aesthetic beauty. Artists are often moved to capture the whims of Mother Nature and in the process of artistic discovery, we have unearthed amazing constants such as the "Golden Mean", the Fibonacci sequence, fractals and mathematical harmony. Please join us for this unique exhibition as well as the lectures that inform the endless variety of nature.

Opening Reception - Saturday, Oct. 17 5:00pm - 7:30pm

FREE Exhibition Lectures

"Getting the Picture - Science and Art" presented by Dr. Ray Petersen - Sunday, Oct. 11, 5:30pm-7:00pm

It's really quite amazing that three areas of mathematics so nicely describe physical reality. These area are the Fibonacci number sequence, non-Euclidean geometry and fractals. The biologist/artist Dr. Ray Petersen will present these areas at an introductory level with examples of their occurrence in nature, as well as to their use and application in art, music and architecture.

"Beauty in the Fine Structure of Nature" - presented by Dr. Fred Yost - Sunday, Oct. 18, 5:30pm - 7:00pm

We have often admired snowflakes, sea shells, and feathers but how often have we appreciated the shape of a radiolarian, the engineered structure of a dragonfly wing, patterns found in bacterial colonies, or the vast number of spiral shapes, large and small, found in nature? Dr. Yost will share his journey exploring these fine structures and his attempts at reproducing this beauty exploring a variety of materials and approaches.

District Chapter 219 is the local chapter of the Colored Pencil Society (CPSA). which promotes the stature and awareness of colored pencil as a fine art medium. Founded in 2000, we presently have about 25 members, some of whom are new to the medium, and some who are award-winning professionals. Chapter meetings are held on the 4th Saturday of each month, and usually include a program relating to working with the medium. Please visit our blog sit:, and join us for a meeting.
