In this informative 4 day workshop students will be exposed to a wide range of technical drawing skills and information as we cover the ins-and-outs of the entire process of creating a portrait drawing from life. For centuries master draftsmen have utilized careful observation, understanding, and carefully honed methodology in order to create beautiful, intimate portraits. Focusing on a traditional, methodical approach to drawing, Coulter Prehm will lead students along the path to creating a successful portrait drawing in graphite, focusing heavily on step by step approach, mark making, understanding light and form, and how to achieve a likeness in a drawing. Each morning will begin with a demonstration from the model, followed by an afternoon session where students will implement techniques and ideas expressed in the morning. Over the first 3 days students will work on completing a single finished portrait, with the 4th day dedicated to creating a separate portrait drawing over the entirety of the day. Join us for an exciting time of intensive study and learn what it takes to bring classical skills and understanding into contemporary portrait art!

In this 8-week course, we’ll explore one of the most expressive and ever-changing subjects in the landscape: the sky! Students will learn to capture clouds, light, and atmosphere while exploring the subtle transitions that give skies their emotional power. Through a mix of structured lessons and personal exploration, we’ll study essential principles of landscape painting: composition, color temperature, brushwork, paint application, edges, and focal points. Techniques such as alla prima, layered painting, realism, and impressionism will be introduced, allowing you to adapt each approach to your own artistic goals. The pace of the class offers plenty of time for hands-on painting and instructor demonstrations. Supportive, individualized instruction ensures every student, from beginner to advanced, can grow with confidence. Painters working in oil, acrylic, or watercolor are welcome.
