A still life is simply an arrangement of objects, natural or man-made, that are illuminated by a constant light source. Its roots can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians but became a painting genre in the seventeenth century. Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Delacroix, Cezanne, and Diego Rivera all painted the still life. And for good reason—it is the simplest and most comprehensive way for an artist to apply and practice just about everything they would like to learn about painting.

Together we will arrange a still life to create a dynamic composition. Students will gain an understanding of this classic genre by studying the interplay of light and shadow and how the viewers eye moves around the painting. Topics will include: focal point, luminosity, texture, folds, toning, color, pictorial balance and mood.
