Cacti are botanical subjects that present all kinds of fun perspective challenges! Join Marjorie Leggitt in this 3 session workshop as she guides you to create a colorful composition of Opuntia, better known as Prickly Pear. Marjorie will help you to discover how these succulents conform to basic geometric forms and mathematical patterns. Then follow along with exercises that hone your observation and artistic skills as you develop a graphite perspective drawing. Through demos and exercises, learn how to combine the expressiveness of a pen with the subtle colors of watercolor. Discover non-traditional pen and ink marks to create unique textures and forms. Practice color mixing and watercolor layering to enhance the line work and capture earthy, luminescent colors. Learn about the principles of cast shadows from your own clay model. Apply your new skills to create a wonderful mixed media piece of art. Previous experience using watercolor is strongly recommended.

This workshop is designed to introduce students to the unique characteristics of painting on location with gouache. Using a casein underpainting, we will work on location to capture the light in the New Mexico landscape. Gouache is a perfect medium for plein aire painting with fast drying times. Basically an opaque watercolor, gouache acts very differently from oils or acrylics. It is not a difficult medium and that simplicity makes it exciting to work with. Students will be encouraged to paint in smaller formats with the goal of completing two pieces each day. Color characteristics of gouache will be studied and developed thoughout the workshop. The emphasis throughout will be on learning, having fun, and developing skills to paint with this incredible medium. Each day will start with a short discussion and demo, then students will paint for the remainder of the class with one on one instruction from Cynthia.

This portrait workshop is designed for artists working in either oils or pastel. Susan will work with and teach in both mediums. For the first part of each class Susan will answer any questions from the group before she illustrates lessons on different ways to approach portraits through screen share. She will show masterworks of past and present artists to discuss different lighting and painting techniques. This should inspire and give the class examples of how to use the different mediums to achieve various effects and moods. The second half of each class will focus on Susan demonstrating her approach to working from a photo. She will offer the same photo references to the class so they can paint along as she demonstrates, or have the option of painting it as homework during the week. Students are encouraged to email their homework images during the week for Susan to give her suggestions advice to each student throughout the workshop. Susan will do a pastel demo for the 1st and 3rd class and an oil demo for the 2nd and 4th class.

Students at all levels are welcome.

Extra drying time will allow you to work back into your prints. Traditional oil painting process can be used or experimental techniques are possible… dark and light field printmaking or drawing are options. Students will be encouraged to make intuitive choices and experiment with marks and patterns. The process will still involve painting on a plate directly and making a print from it. Don’t miss the wonderful opportunity to work with Santa Fe based artist, Toby Hall, in person!

In this five-day oil painting workshop, students will work from direct observation to develop a figure painting.  The course will begin with the analysis of the global light effect via a quick, abstract "poster study" exercise.  From there, students will begin by blocking-in the drawing foundation for the figure before transitioning to painting directly on a toned ground.  Both perceptual and conceptual drawing & painting strategies will be discussed and employed during instructor demos and student feedback to help reinforce the process.  Though some material techniques will be covered, the goal of this workshop is for us to focus on ideas that will help us grasp the visual experience as it applies to nature and the human form.

Please sign up early, as class size is limited to 10 students.

This painting workshop will include multiple ways of utilizing and developing abstract ideas about image making in a weeklong session. Abstraction has a unique way of allowing the artist to use real and imagined forms, colors, surfaces and compositions that access both the subjective and objective sensibilities. Works can be inspired by the essence of a memory or a new image that is nothing more than being completely itself. Absolute freedom and systems that give active support to that freedom. It will be fun, a lot of work, and you might even learn something that you didn’t know you needed to know, if you know what I mean! Dress for mess, bikini’s optional, sensible shoes a must. Surf’s up! Some previous experience with either oil or acrylic suggested.

Join John Reger for this 4-day workshop offering an in depth study of the fundamentals of academic ‘long-pose’ life drawing. Perfect for all artists, beginners or advanced, we will focus on developing an understanding of the classical tradition of realistic figure drawing. Students will be introduced to the manual, procedural, and analytical techniques of a refined, articulate, realistic approach to pencil drawing. Presented with an immersive drawing experience, students will progress with the most effective learning tool,  the multi-level experience of drawing itself.  Participants will be introduced to a refined, articulate drawing style in which drawings are built up methodically through a succession of linear and tonal stages: (1) the envelope:a simple, foundational shape encompassing the whole figure, (2) the block-in: the complex, abstract shape of the figure, (3) the contour: the specific, linear description of the silhouette of the figure, (4) drawing on the inside: the tonal description of the form of the body within the confines of the contour.  The focus is on patience, craft, observation, and understanding of drawing principles. You will be amazed at what you can learn in 4 days!
