All media, charcoal and pencil, pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors, are welcome. Check out Alice’s recent work at alicewebbart.com.

Join watercolor artist, Pamela Barcita, as she demonstrates her unique ability to create textures and effects that truly seem to capture a moment in time. Step by step, students will be introduced to new techniques while creating four different compositions; rust and patina – created with vintage or neglected items that tell their unique histories, reflection and transparency in water – creating a scene revealing what’s under, on and reflected above a waterscape,  snow – creating the telltale signs of passers-by in a snowy landscape and shadows – showcasing interesting shapes that become the surprising focal point of a composition. The results will be both beautiful and effective leaving students with a whole new set of techniques to apply to future paintings! Students at all levels are welcome.

Our health is important to us as we pursue our favorite pastime. That means learning to paint without paint thinner. Dick will lead students through traditional oil painting techniques using oil paints or water soluble oil paints. We will cover how much and which oil media to use, how much and when to use water, how to clean bushes safely and painting in plein aire vs in the studio. This class is really about going back to basics and simplifying our lives. There are so many colors and palette choices to choose from. How do we decide? By limiting our palette we have fewer choices to make when mixing colors which simplifies the process. Also it is much easier to understand how to mix paint by looking at paint rather than talking about “color theory”. This all makes the learning process fun. In the first class I will condense the toxic free painting methods and the limited palette to help us all understand and move forward to working on your own paintings (using your own photos or laptop) as soon as possible. I prefer talking and demonstrating for a short time then having students follow me initially. After that, plan on using some new paints and techniques to produce works you will be proud of. This class is focused on painting in oils, but students working in acrylics or watercolor are welcome.

Join VASILI KATAKIS in this in-depth study of an essential topic for all artists.  This uniquely designed course has been created specifically for artists wanting to expand their knowledge of perspective, and is open to all media. We will learn how to apply perspective principles to your compositions, creating the feeling of depth and mood. Artists needs are unique and differ from those of architects and engineers who use traditional methods to learn perspective drawing. There will be no need for complex construction lines or mechanical devices. We will combine simple drawing techniques with basic design principles to create the illusion of depth. A sense of “correctness” will replace the need to be precise. While linear perspective is important, it’s only one component that contributes to the success of a good drawing or painting. Course topics will include: light & shade, areal and intuitive perspective, fixation points, Goldilocksʼ rule and more. Basic drawing skills will benefit the student. A perfect next step for beginners and intermediate drawing students ready to learn how to depict depth and space in their work. All media accepted.

Tired of drawing the same old apples and oranges?  How about creating a shape or presenting a color relationship that has never been seen before? This 8-week class will examine the infinite possibilities of abstraction using various dry drawing materials and water based paint and/or through the painting mediums of oil or acrylics.  Each student will have the option to decide what materials to use and when. The exception being the homework assignments which will always be done on paper. Class can be as structured or as open as desired to enable the creative voice to have its say.  Students who prefer more structure will work on in-class assignments while others may choose to treat the class as an open studio, pursuing individual projects. Contemporary artists as well as artist from history will be discussed to remind us of what is happening and what has happened, renewing our connection to world culture. Class critiques will provide a window into ideas, process and intent. This class will be both challenging and fun as you discover the infinite freedom of abstraction!

This workshop is designed to introduce students to the unique characteristics of painting on location with gouache. Using a casein underpainting, we will work on location to capture the light in the New Mexico landscape. Gouache is a perfect medium for plein aire painting with fast drying times. Basically an opaque watercolor, gouache acts very differently from oils or acrylics. It is not a difficult medium and that simplicity makes it exciting to work with. Students will be encouraged to paint in smaller formats with the goal of completing two pieces each day. Color characteristics of gouache will be studied and developed thoughout the workshop. The emphasis throughout will be on learning, having fun, and developing skills to paint with this incredible medium. Each day will start with a short discussion and demo, then students will paint for the remainder of the class with one on one instruction from Cynthia.

This portrait workshop is designed for artists working in either oils or pastel. Susan will work with and teach in both mediums. For the first part of each class Susan will answer any questions from the group before she illustrates lessons on different ways to approach portraits through screen share. She will show masterworks of past and present artists to discuss different lighting and painting techniques. This should inspire and give the class examples of how to use the different mediums to achieve various effects and moods. The second half of each class will focus on Susan demonstrating her approach to working from a photo. She will offer the same photo references to the class so they can paint along as she demonstrates, or have the option of painting it as homework during the week. Students are encouraged to email their homework images during the week for Susan to give her suggestions advice to each student throughout the workshop. Susan will do a pastel demo for the 1st and 3rd class and an oil demo for the 2nd and 4th class.

Don’t miss the wonderful opportunity to work with Santa Fe based artist, Toby Hall, in person!

In this five-day oil painting workshop, students will work from direct observation to develop a figure painting.  The course will begin with the analysis of the global light effect via a quick, abstract "poster study" exercise.  From there, students will begin by blocking-in the drawing foundation for the figure before transitioning to painting directly on a toned ground.  Both perceptual and conceptual drawing & painting strategies will be discussed and employed during instructor demos and student feedback to help reinforce the process.  Though some material techniques will be covered, the goal of this workshop is for us to focus on ideas that will help us grasp the visual experience as it applies to nature and the human form.

This painting workshop will include multiple ways of utilizing and developing abstract ideas about image making in a weeklong session. Abstraction has a unique way of allowing the artist to use real and imagined forms, colors, surfaces and compositions that access both the subjective and objective sensibilities. Works can be inspired by the essence of a memory or a new image that is nothing more than being completely itself. Absolute freedom and systems that give active support to that freedom. It will be fun, a lot of work, and you might even learn something that you didn’t know you needed to know, if you know what I mean! Dress for mess, bikini’s optional, sensible shoes a must. Surf’s up! Some previous experience with either oil or acrylic suggested.

Join John Reger for this 4-day workshop offering an in depth study of the fundamentals of academic ‘long-pose’ life drawing. Perfect for all artists, beginners or advanced, we will focus on developing an understanding of the classical tradition of realistic figure drawing. Students will be introduced to the manual, procedural, and analytical techniques of a refined, articulate, realistic approach to pencil drawing. Presented with an immersive drawing experience, students will progress with the most effective learning tool,  the multi-level experience of drawing itself.  Participants will be introduced to a refined, articulate drawing style in which drawings are built up methodically through a succession of linear and tonal stages: (1) the envelope:a simple, foundational shape encompassing the whole figure, (2) the block-in: the complex, abstract shape of the figure, (3) the contour: the specific, linear description of the silhouette of the figure, (4) drawing on the inside: the tonal description of the form of the body within the confines of the contour.  The focus is on patience, craft, observation, and understanding of drawing principles. You will be amazed at what you can learn in 4 days!

Please sign up early; class size is limited.

Are you a tree lover AND an artist? Then this workshop is for you! Trees, which have been a venerated subject matter in art for centuries, will be our primary focus as we investigate a variety of materials and methods for art making. Exploring color, composition and form in a dynamic way, students will discover multiple ways to create beautiful tree images. We will incorporate traditional monoprint making processes, painting techniques and collage with contemporary materials like stencils, spray paint and modeling as we explore the many ways to render trees. Class includes a lecture and demon-strations as well as hours of fun painting trees. Students at all levels are welcome.

Please sign up early; class size is limited.
